North Dakota Oil Production Closing On 1 Million Barrels A Day – July Hits New Record High
Oil and gas production in North Dakota hit a new record high in July as warm weather allowed more wells to be brought online. The poor weather conditions in the previous months had affected production and well completions. The wet weather in May and road restrictions not being lifted until June had many crews sitting idle and unable to deliver frack sand to the wells.
The drilling rig count slightly decreased from June to July, down one for a July total of 186. Once the weather started clearing at the end of June, well completions jumped 102 to 251 and resulted in a 6.4% increase in oil production. This is more than three times the number of well completions needed to maintain oil production in North Dakota. Completion crews outpaced drilling rigs for the first time this year. Oil and gas production statistics are provided below.
Oil & Gas Production Numbers
- June oil: 821,598 bpd
- July oil: 874,460 bpd
- June gas: 933,456 MCF/day
- July gas: 970,305 MCF/day
- June producing wells: 9,096
- July producing wells: 9,322
Oil output in July increased by 53,045 barrels a day from the month of June to a new, all-time high of 874,460 bpd, according to the North Dakota Industrial Commission’s Department of Mineral Resources. Natural gas production rose by 39,337 MCF a day from the month of June, also setting a new, all-time high at 970,305 MCF a day. The number of July producing wells was at 9,322, up 226 from June.
Output Closing On 1 Million Barrels A Day
Lynn Helms, director of North Dakota’s Department of Mineral Resources has noted that output will continue to climb in the coming months with new wells brought online. Barring no early winter arrival, North Dakota should be crossing the 1 million barrels a day mark sometime in October of this year if completion and production numbers stay consistent. North Dakota winters can be harsh and many companies struggle with employee attrition rates when the months start getting colder.
